Oscar statuette awarded to Paul Groesse for "Color Art Direction" for the 1946 Technicolor film, "The Yearling." The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented this statue to Groesse on 13 March 1947 at the Shrine Civic Auditorium. Groesse, a three time Oscar winner, shared the award with Cedric Gibbons. The art direction award was divided into separate awards for black-and-white and color films in 1940. "The Yearling" also received the Academy Award for Best Cinematography (color) and was nominated for seven awards including Best Actor (Gregory Peck) and Best Picture. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, the 1946 film version of "The Yearling" starred Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman and Claude Jarman, Jr. The movie centers around a young boy, played by Jarman, Jr., who adopts a fawn as a pet after the shooting of its mother. The movie devotes most of its screen time to Jarman, Jr., a young 13 year old, who received a special "Juvenile Oscar." The engraved plaque on the pedestal reads, "Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences / First Award / 1946 / To Paul Groesse for Color Art Direction of 'The Yearling'". The figure and film reel, composed of gold-plated britannium measuring 10" tall, top the pedestal, bringing the total height to 13". The pedestal's diameter measures 5". The award weighs 6 pounds. Moderate tarnishing to statuette. Overall in very good condition.
