Dr. Seuss typed letter signed with an accompanying illustration of the Cat in the Hat. He writes on his personal stationery to his friend Diddo Clark, a UCSD teacher's assistant-turned law student. The letter, dated 22 July 1976, reads in part: ''Dear Diddo: Welcome back to La Jolla! And Happy Bar Exams! Audrey and I very much want to see you...But I am afraid that your beautiful invitation to the Ramona picnic will have to be bypassed...The problem is I am just getting over an eye operation. Successful as it was I am still learning to focus with my new implant and am being forced to eschew for the nonce all pleasant outdoor activities such as picnics and swims. Thanks for asking us and please drink an extra potion of apple juice for us...Very, very best, [Signed in purple marker] Ted''. He draws a flourish beneath the signature. 1pp. Measures 7'' x 10.25''. Creasing, else near fine. On a separate sheet bearing a color print of his ''Cat in the Hat'' character, he uses the purple marker to draw an eye patch on the Cat, tying its strings atop the hat. Seuss draws a dialogue bubble in green marker surrounding a message in pink: ''No Picnics, Alas!''. Measures 5.5'' x 8.5''. Creasing and ink notation to verso, else fine. A charming pair of written and pictorial communications from the century's greatest children's book author.
