John Hay typed letter signed as Secretary of State. Before occupying this position he was Abraham Lincoln's personal secretary. Letter dated 13 May 1902 and addressed to Mr. Darlington of the Union League in Philadelphia, reads: ''...I have received the handsome volume of the Chronicle of the Union League, which you were so kind as to send me. It is a work of great interest and permanent value, and one of the most beautiful specimens of book making I have ever seen. I thank you sincerely for it, and am, Faithfully yours / [signed] John Hay''. The Union League was created in support of Lincoln and his agenda. 1pp. letter on mourning stationery measures 5'' x 8''. Toning and creasing. Very good.
