Hardcover bound collection of ''The New York Times'' from the last days before the stock market crashed and plunged the country into the Great Depression. 8 consecutively dated issues begin with 16 October and run through the 23rd. The articles discuss market instability, but provide readers no sense of impeding economic ruin. Instead, they reveal the optimism of the day's top financial experts. The head of the National City Bank of New York states that stock investments are sound, and the head of Economics at Yale concurs. An article from the 16 October issue begins: ''Stocks of all sorts milled about in curiously confused fashion yesterday...the down trend was unmistakeable...'' It goes on to dismiss the market's volatility as the result of ''...religious holidays and other outside interests...'' By the 23rd, the ''Times'' was happy to report an ''...upswing [in wheat and cotton] combined to dispel some of the gloom which had settled over Wall Street...'' Newspapers run about 50-60pp. each and include period advertising. Al Capone makes the headlines from behind bars as he is accused of masterminding more murders. Papers bound in gray-green cloth boards with black lettering to spine, measuring 18'' x 22.75''. Sunning and shredding to backstrip and staining to boards. Toning to newsprint and a few small tears to edges. Previous owner's bookplates affixed to front pastedown. Overall in very good condition.
