Author Ludwig Bemelmans signs this British edition of the beloved "Madeline" and adds a sketch of an elephant being held comically overhead by a boy. Published by Derek Verschoyle: London: 1953. With blue ink upon the front free endpaper, the renowned illustrator draws a smiling child suspending a stout elephant in midair. Below the drawing, he writes, "To the Superchief / from his / Godfather / Ludwig". Written on the elephant are the words, "Bebe font", also in his hand. Bemelmans published a book in 1966 entitled "Elephant Cutlet," to which this drawing might reference. Light foxing and soiling to opening pages and pastedowns of 9" x 12.25" book, which has illustrated paper boards. Moderate foxing and paper loss to original dustjacket with unclipped 12s. 6d. net price. Overall very good condition.
