Sewing box and tools as used in a Civil War nurses' camp. The contents of the amply stocked box include the necessary sewing implements of the day including the classic tomato-shaped pin cushion, and provisions such as button hooks and more than thirty buttons. The button hook is metal with an off-white handle, likely made of bone or celluloid. Rather unexpected yet practical accoutrements are also housed within, including an ink well and pen, and a pair of spectacles. Interestingly, a pair of metal officers' cufflinks engraved ''K'' can be found inside as well, perhaps those of a soldier treated by the nurse to whom this kit belonged. Cherry wood box with partitioned shelf and functional lock and key measures approximately 11.5'' across, 7.75'' deep, and 4.5'' high. Glossy finish. In very good condition. Originally from the Old Antietam Museum, used in their display of nurses attending to the wounded on the battlefield.
