J.D. Salinger letter signed, spanning one full sheet of typed correspondence, with original transmittal envelope postmarked Windsor, Vermont on 13 June 1970. Salinger writes to Joyce Miller, a friend who worked at ''The New Yorker'' in mid-century, during the time Salinger was publishing stories there and working on ''The Catcher in the Rye''. Salinger is wistful in the letter, even a bit melancholy on the occasion of Joyce turning 40, as he reminisces about their times together before Salinger's marriage to Claire Douglas, whom he recently divorced. In small part, ''...the mind having all the strings and padlocks it has, but we did get some real and deep-set fun done between us. On our own terms...On gray days, my thoughts run to that fine indulgent setting, adding little touches here and there to the old plot-line. I wonder if old basic plots ever go way...Jerry''. Lot includes Joyce's original letter to Salinger, dated 14 May 1970, where she had invited him to her 40th birthday party and writes, ''...You are a very profound part of my life: You saved me from mediocrity, and gave me a sense of self that has stayed with me...'' She writes more personal content and also thoughts upon President Nixon. Salinger's letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Folds, otherwise near fine. A unique letter with more personal content than usually found in Salinger's letters, likely precipitated by the emotional content of Joyce's letter to him. Photo has been intentionally blurred.
