Ernest Hemingway car insurance policy, with attached cards for each of his three vehicles: a 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook convertible, a 1955 Chrysler New Yorker convertible and a 1950 Buick station wagon, all housed at his Cuban estate ''Finca La Vigia''. Policy is dated 15 July 1960 to last for one year, expiring shortly after Hemingway's death. Hemingway was involved in a number of car accidents throughout his life, contributing to the chronic pain which is thought to have been the reason for his suicide. Lot also includes a color reprint and slide of four people riding in what appears to be the Chrysler. Items are from the personal property of Roberto Herrera Sotolongo, Hemingway's friend and personal secretary, whom Hemingway met in 1942, when Herrera became a crewmember aboard ''Pilar'', at the height of World War II when Hemingway patrolled the Gulf Stream for German submarines for the U.S. government. After Hemingway's death in 1961, Herrera was appointed to represent his affairs in Cuba, including the deeding of the property and contents of ''Il Finca Vigia'' to the Cuban people ''as a place of opportunity for wider education and research, to be maintained in his memory.'' The property became a museum, and Herrera acted as its Conservator until his death in 1970. Written by ''The Liverpool & London & Globe Insurance Company Limited'', this insurance document runs three pages with three attached cards. Pages vary in size, but largest measures 8.5'' x 13.5''. Light foxing, overall in very good plus condition.
