John Updike's Hemingway Literary Light Award, presented to the Pulitzer Prize winning ''Rabbit, Run'' author in 1999 at the Hemingway International Festival on Sanibel Island, Florida. In his book ''Due Considerations'', Updike publishes the speech he gave when he accepted the award, ''To win this award is certainly a fine way for me to end the century. Of the classic American writers of the twentieth century, Hemingway is the one with whom I have the longest and most animated relationship...[Hemingway] had a fierce will to be exquisite, to be honest, to cut the crap of 'literature' in the interests of literature. He was both a man of action and a bookish man...He gave those of us who would write in this century lessons in dialogue, in blunt and elliptical verity, in gallows humor, in risk as a kind of corporeal poetry, in the pencil-wielder's daily patience...'' The substantial award, cut to look like a glass block shard, has Hemingway's image pixelated on the back. Engraved to the front reads ''The 1999 Hemingway Literary Light Award / John Updike''. Award weighs 12 lbs., 5 ounces and measures approximately 7.5'' x 8''. Impressive, beautiful award honoring two leading literary voices of the 20th century. With an LOA from John Updike's son, revealing that Updike kept the award in his office, along with a copy of ''Due Considerations'' by Updike, where the acceptance speech appears.
