Booker T. Washington typed letter signed, dated 11 January 1907. Composed on Tuskegee Institute stationery, Washington writes to a Mrs. Thomas J. Emery in Cincinnati, Ohio in part, ''...I am convinced, after careful study of our condition and needs, that agriculture is our salvation and it should be pushed at this time...I feel that I can accomplish the most good just now by remaining in the South where I am spending a good deal of time in speaking to both white and colored audiences and, I think, accomplishing great good in bettering present conditions...I am not asking you to become a regular donor to our institution, but to help us in this special case...[signed] Booker T. Washington. Letter measures 5.5'' x 7.25'' framed with a photograph of Washington to an overall size of 18.5'' x 13''. Partial smudge to signature, else near fine.
