American flag flown in space on NASA's STS-1 mission. On 12 April 1981 from Kennedy Space Center, the Space Shuttle Columbia launched its record-breaking mission as the very first American orbital manned spacecraft to complete flight. The two man crew, commander John Young and pilot Robert Crippen, successfully landed two days later at Edwards Air Force Base. Flag measures 5.75'' x 4'' and comes affixed to NASA certificate which reads, ''This flag was flown aboard Space Shuttle 'Columbia' (STS-1) April 12-14, 1981''. Certificate measures 8.5'' x 11''. Discoloration to flag from glue and uniform toning to certificate, else near fine.
