Exceptional autograph letter signed by King William IV, while he served as Duke of Clarence in 1803. William gives his candid opinion of Napoleon, whose empire was rapidly expanding at the time of the letter, dated 15 December 1803. Written from the Duke's Bushy House residence in London to an unknown recipient, William writes of Napoleon, ''...as for this rascal Bonaparte, I wish he was at the bottom of the sea: all naval officers think invasion impossible and that is clearly my opinion...'' With additional content on Napoleon, though difficult to read. Boldly signed, ''Yours sincerely / William'' at the conclusion of the 2pp. letter. Single sheet measures 7.5'' x 9.25''. Toning and small holes at intersecting folds. Very good condition.
