First edition, later printing of Harriet Beecher Stowe's masterpiece ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'', printed by John P. Jewett & Company: Boston: 1852. Extremely popular during the 1850's, this novel perhaps did more to turn northerners against slavery than any other publication or speech; upon meeting Stowe at a White House reception, Abraham Lincoln was said to have exclaimed, ''So this is the little lady who started this big war.'' Two-volume set features gilt embellishments to boards. Volume 1 of the novel runs 312pp., with the second volume running 322pp. Each measures approximately 5'' x 7.75''. Cocking to spines, shelf wear and staining throughout interior. Good condition.
