Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed ''Ike'', dated 25 September [1944] as Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces during World War II. Here, Eisenhower writes intimately to his wife, Mamie, reassuring her that the wartime distance between them shall be overcome. He also mentions Doud ''Icky'' Eisenhower, his son who died of scarlet fever at the young age of three, as the letter was written the day after the anniversary of his death. Letter in black ink reads in part: ''Darling: This morning the letter arrived that you wrote on Sunday the 17th, just after you and Min had returned from Pueblo. It would be wonderful if the medicos could find out what is the reason for your lack of balance. I was going to write you today anyway because yesterday I thought so frequently of Icky. He would have been 27 years old! Johnny is exaggerating a bit when he says I know all the details of his transfer to 71st Div. I know nothing at all, but it is possible his letter is on the way. His notes take about a month to reach me. Of course we've changed. How could two people go through what we have, each in his own way, and without seeing each other except once in more than two years, and still believe they could be exactly as they were. The rule of nature is constant change. But it seems to me the thing to do is to retain our sense of humor, and try to make an interesting game of getting acquainted again. After all, there is no 'problem' separating us -- it is merely distance, and that can some day be eliminated. I'll be scared of you -- but 'I'll like you' as Kathryn always said!...always yours, Ike''. Letter on 2pp. measures 8'' x 10.5''. Minor toning and creasing throughout, else near fine.
