Rare 1954 English League Championship football medal awarded to Joe Gardiner, the main trainer and former center-back player on the team. Medal is for the Champions division, or the first of three tiers in the league. The Wolverhampton Wanderers, known as the Wolves, were one of the founding members of the Football League, the oldest such competition in world football. During the 20th century, the Football League was the top-level football league in England. Garnered during the Wolves most successful run in history, the team beat out local rivals West Bromwich Albion late in the season. Obverse of gold medal is engraved ''The Football League / Champions Division 1'' and upon verso, ''Season / 1953-54 / J. Gardiner / Wolves''. Measures 1.25'' in diameter and weighs 16 grams. With ''Vaughtons Birmingham'' hallmark to lower portion of obverse and a second ''V&S'' (Vaughtons & Sons) gold hallmarks to lower portion of verso. Some minor tarnishing throughout, else very good to near fine. Housed in original presentation box with ''The Football League'' in gilt to top.
