Archive of wild west character Elfego Baca. Lot includes a typed letter signed by Baca, his business card, his law practice pamphlet and his first edition biography. Notable for his survival and unlikely success within the violent world of the old west, Baca rose to prominence as a gunfighter turned lawyer. After appointing himself deputy sheriff in Socorro County, New Mexico at age 19 he became notorious for the Frisco Shootout, in which he singlehandedly kept as many as 80 cowboys at bay for 33 hours and emerged unscathed. The typed letter signed is dated 1 May 1912 and reads in part: ''...I went to El Paso on the 19th on important business...[signed] Elfego Baca''. 1pp. on his law office stationery measures 8.5'' x 11''. Tape repairs to verso, else near fine. Business card reads ''Elfego Baca / Attorney and Counsellor at Law / Practice in the United States Supreme Court / and all other Courts / 523 Gold Avenue / Albuquerque, New Mexico''. Slight wear and surface loss to verso, else near fine. Pamphlet advertises his detective agency's services, including ''Shadowing / Watchmen Furnished / Investigations...'' First edition, first printing of his fascinating biography is titled ''Law and Order Ltd. / The Rousing Life of Elfego Baca'' by Kyle S. Crichton, published by New Mexican Publishing Corporation: Santa Fe: 1928. Runs 219pp. Bound in brown cloth boards with red lettering. Measures 6'' x 8.75''. Wear to edges and pencil notation to front free endpaper; Santa Fe book store label affixed, overall very good. Dustjacket is price clipped and lightly toned, else near fine.
