William T. Sherman autograph letter signed, dated 23 July 1989. Writing to friend General Stewart Van Vliet, letter reads in full: ''Dear Van - I was much relieved by the receipt here of your letter from Shrewsbury of July 19. I feared my former letters had failed to reach you - I cannot promise to come to Shrewsbury now. Elly + William (?) with children are now here. July + August [illegible] by their holidays. I was abet of Denver three weeks and find the demands on my time for which I ought to be excused but I must go to Milwaukee in August and Cincinnati in September...which I find myself committed to Lakeview Dobbs time (?) the Catskills etc. etc. etc. giving me no rest whatever. I was at the Union League Club last night till midnight and learned that Kendrick is failing sensibly. I did not see him but it is manifest. You, Getty and I are destined to be the survivors of our class. Instead of my moving around the whole continent I have the right to call on my class mates and friends to call on me. They shall be ever welcome. Wen you come to the city take the sixth avenue elevated car to 72nd street within a hundred yards of my house. Give my best love...to friends and family...Your classmate, W.T. Sherman''. Accompanied by mailing envelope. Runs 3pp. on a single sheet of card-style stationery. Measures 5.5'' x 9.25''.
