Rare William Steig hand-drawn cartoon. Like thousands of Steig's drawings beginning in 1930, this cartoon appeared in the ''New Yorker,'' on 6 June 1953. He created his masterpiece character, Shrek, in 1990, at the age of 83. He signs his drawing ''Wm. Steig'', depicting a man and a woman caught in an embrace by a visibly angered man in a suit. Steig's handwritten caption reads: ''The Agreement as I remember it, Mr. Plitz, was for room and board and telephone privileges!'' Comic comes framed with a label affixed to verso entering it in a 1953 exhibit for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Philadelphia Water Color Club. Steig's name appears in type on the label, with handwritten notations in black felt tip citing the title as ''Agreement-------'' The cartoon measures 7.25'' x 5.5'' and has been folded to fit in the frame. The caption does not show, so the mat bears the caption as well, written in the hand of Eldon Dedini, Steig's fellow New Yorker cartoonist. Measures 12.5'' x 10.5'' overall. Creasing, else near fine.
