Franklin Pierce document signed as President alongside Jefferson Davis, who signs as Secretary of War. Document is dated 14 August 1854, just six years before Davis became President of the Confederate States. Document commissions Civil War engineer William Craighill as a Brevet 2nd Lt. in the Corp of Engineers. Partially-printed commission is mounted to paper board to an overall size of 14'' x 18''. Fading to Davis' signature, with a small pencil notation to the right side and mounted, overall very good.
