Cannonball from a sunken ship of the Spanish treasure fleet. Eleven of the dozen ships en route to Spain from Vera Cruz sank off the coast of Florida on 31 July 1715. The captain, General Don Juan Esteban de Ubilla ignored hurricane warnings in an effort to rush commerce for the hard-up Spain, whose resources were depleted by the War of Spanish Succession. By July of 1716, the Spanish had recovered approximately half of the treasure and the rest, this piece included, was recovered by Mel Fisher of the Cobb Coin Co. in 1985. Cannonball is accompanied by two identifying tags: ''32 TSOP'' and ''8IR20 032 1984 COBB COIN''. Measures 6'' in diameter. Encrusted with shells and sediment, else good.
