Extensive lot from 1942 of the famous SS Cabo de Hornos, a ship that regularly transported Jewish refugees from Europe to the Americas during WWII to escape Naziism. From the Cabo de Hornos voyage that arrived in Argentina in late January 1942 comes this lot: over 100 documents, including passenger manifests, immigration certificates, consulate letters and other official paperwork. This voyage of the Cabo de Hornos immediately followed its most famous trip, where it held approximately 90 Jewish refugees while they awaited their fate -- possible deportation back to Europe and into concentration camps. The refugees had previously been in Argentina, who then expelled them and even prohibited them from crossing Buenos Aires to go to Paraguay. Fortunately, the Dutch government of Curacao gave the refugees semi-permanent residence until homes could be found for them. After leaving this group in Curacao, the ship made its way back to Europe to take the next round of people fleeing Europe for the Americas, from which these documents originate. Lot includes approximately 23 pages of passenger lists for the ship, including several interesting Spanish documents related to individual passengers, one for Marthe Weil who needed to stay in the capital for a few days after disembarking. Most of the documents are on official Argentinian and Chilean letterhead, many from various consulates and from the Immigration Department. Nearly all documents are stamped from the government agencies; one has remnants of a consulate's red wax seal. All documents are in Spanish with interesting, detailed content regarding the immigration status of individual passengers. Lot also includes a photo of the SS Cabo de Hornos and a matching postcard showing the ship. Expected light wear and toning to documents with isolated chipping and foxing to some. Very good condition.
