Stanley Kubrick typed letter signed on his personal stationery, dated 8 December 1966 as he was filming ''2001: A Space Odyssey.'' Letter is addressed to ''New Yorker'' journalist Jeremy Bernstein, who profiled the director for the magazine and the two remained friends. Reads in full: ''Your description of the encounter with Morris Shamos is spine chilling and beautifully written. It sounds to me like you are about ready to do your first work of 'fiction.' The drama of the academic scene is much more intense than one would have imagined. What a villainous person he sounds like. The movie is going well. I am not sure of the date about coming back to New York. Let me know how things turn out.'' Signed ''Stanley'' in blue ink, letter measures 7.25'' x 10.5''. Very minor toning, else near fine.
