Arthur Ashe's 1990 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life, which would end in just 6 years. Ashe's priorities are revealed through his concise, utilitarian entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. Ashe discovered in 1988 that he had contracted HIV in a blood transfusion, but kept his diagnosis private until 1992, when he became an activist in the anti-AIDS effort before his 1993 passing. In tennis, Ashe here mentions the ATP [Association of Tennis Professionals] dinner and an article he was apparently writing about Wimbledon, and also one for Ebony magazine. On his social calendar, Ashe writes, ''Jackie Robinson dinner / Waldorf Astoria'', ''HBO'', ''Transafrica Dinner'', ''Kean College Honorary Degree'' and ''golf''. In large letters Ashe records, ''MANDELA RELEASED!!'' on that famous day in February. Later he notes, ''NELSON MANDELA ARRIVES'' and ''South African visa application''. Ashe became involved in the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa when he called for the country's removal from the major tennis leagues due to its discriminatory policies. One note regarding the Shoal Creek Country Club reads in full: ''Though certain to generate headlines, Shoal Creek's decision to admit?? [Louis Willie] has little to do with sports. It is a social and cultural break through for the black, Hispanic, Asian & Jewish business professional.'' Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club in Alabama hosted the PGA that year and was the center of a controversy due to its lack of any black members until Willie. Ashe keeps track of tennis and other sporting events, marking the day of the Super Bowl and French Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon. He records the deaths of Sammy Davis, Jim Henson and Jim Young. Sadly, he writes reminders pertaining to his fragile health including doctors' appointments, blood tests, and notes on prescriptions for Nystatin and Nizoral medications, and pneumonia prophylactic Pentamidine. Notes in the largest letters pertain to his little daughter Camera and read, ''CAMERA'S BIRTHDAY'' and ''CAMERA'S FIRST SWIMMING LESSON!!!'' and one day he jots, ''Beautiful weather 70 [degrees]''. And interesting notation that appears on several different pages is ''Q re: Michael Jackson''. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on almost every single page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a brick red faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75'' x 8.25''. In very good condition, with only light wear. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
