Arthur Ashe's 1982 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life, which changed dramatically in 1980 when he survived a heart attack and underwent a quadruple bypass, forcing him to retire. He didn't slow down, though, and Ashe's priorities are revealed through his brief but voluminous entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. In tennis, Ashe notes various worldwide match-ups, including Wimbledon, the Davis Cup, the U.S. Open, and also frequently lists notes regarding players such as McEnroe ("McEnroe decision due today"), Connors, Borg and others. He writes under the header "Lloyd", ostensibly referring to English player John Lloyd, "1. Stand back on return 2. Wait for approach shot (NO C.C.) 3. Mix up serves 4. Hit smashes over the fence 5. Come to net with racket in front". Much of Ashe's tennis work this year was devoted to his involvement with the U.S. Davis Cup team, and there are many notes regarding that (list of players on the team, possible match-ups, etc.). Ashe's media appearances are abundant, and include almost every major television network, including David Letterman, CBS and more; one entry reads "ABC - Life after heart attack". Travel this year was widespread, from England to Monte Carlo, Rome to Japan. He also notes various personal events, birthdays, anniversaries, a fishing trip and the like, with "Mother's Death" appearing on 23 March; Ashe's mother passed when he was only six years old. Various other entries include "NAACP Prison Program Meeting NYC", "Davis Cup White House Visit" and "Gandhi film" at Columbia University. He also keeps track of sporting events across all disciplines, such as the Super Bowl and "Cooney-Holmes Fight", and lists many of his contacts with their phone numbers. Book literally houses thousands of Ashe's handwritten notes and observations. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on most every page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book, save for a a few days off the whole year. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with mild toning throughout. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
