Abraham Lincoln assassination letter, dated 28 July 1900, from Dr. George Loring Porter to Louis Weichmann, chief prosecution witness at the conspirators' trial. Porter, medical doctor for the imprisoned conspirators, went on a lecture tour about the assassination after publishing his book, ''The Tragedy of the Nation''. His letter here reads in part, ''...I thank you for the very cordial praise that you have given to my ac. [account] of the conspiracy and the tragedy. It is a faithful report of what I learned at the trial from public & private sources, from what I personally observed and experienced and from what has since been published. So hearty an endorsement from one who was so prominent a witness as yourself is highly appreciated...The paper has been copyrighted & is to be given as a lecture illustrated with slides of the conspirators, the localities and many of the incidents of the flight of Booth & other matters connected with the trial. These of course will add much to the vividness and interest of the description. This lecture I propose to give in the different larger cities under the auspices of the Loyal Legion & Grand Army Posts...Geo. L. Porter''. 5.5'' x 9'' two-page letter is on Bridgeport, Connecticut, Sea Side Outing Club stationery. Near fine condition.
