Letter Regarding Howard Carter's Excavation of King Tut's Tomb in 1923 -- From The Egyptian Government -- ''...to protect the staff...from unjust charges...''

Letter from Egypt's Under Secretary of State regarding Egyptologist Howard Carter's excavation of King Tut's tomb. Unsigned letter, stamped ''Office Copy'', is addressed to the Director General of the Antiquities Service and headed, ''Tutankhamen's Tomb / Mr. Carter's Communique - proposed method of transmission''. Letter lays out a plan for Carter's conveyance of breaking news on the excavation: ''Sir, With reference to the decision that 'the Press Bureau will issue regularly in Jairo early in the morning, reports about the operations of the previous day', after discussion with Mr Carter as to the best modus operandi to prevent leakage and to protect the staff of your department from unjust charges, I am of the opinion that the best plan will be for Mr. Carter to hand to the Chief Inspector at Luxor, an expanded copy of his telegram to 'The Times' not later than 7:30 a.m. of the morning following the despatch of the Times' telegram, and for the Chief Inspector to telegraph it to the Press Bureau in Cairo. The expanded message will be handed to the Chief Inspector ready typed on telegram forms for his signature and despatch. Mr. Carter is prepared to pay the cost of such telegrams, in order to obtain the desired protection from leakage. This arrangement has the additional advantage that the communiques will reach the Press Bureau at an earlier hour than if sent by post and obviates the possibility of the communique not being posted in time to catch the 6 p.m. train to Cairo. Kindly issue instructions for this system to be given a trial. If successful, it should be adopted as a permanent arrangement.'' Single-page letter measures 8.5'' x 13.5''. Scattered stamps and notations, dated 21 November 1923 in several places. Toning, creasing and pencil notations. Very good condition.
