Letter signed by Kiyoshi Tanimoto, the peace activist and Hiroshima survivor who worked tirelessly to help the ''Hiroshima Maidens'', a group of school age girls who were seriously disfigured from the atomic bomb blast. Tanimoto writes to a supporter on 29 May 1952 about the Hiroshima Peace Center Foundation's fundraising efforts and more generally the peace movement in Japan. Letter to fellow Methodist minister, Reverend C.F. Avey of Massachusetts, reads in part,

''I deeply appreciate your letter and donation...Please forgive me for my slow reply to your fine expression of christian love...I always remember your peace organization. As a matter of fact, we organized a Hiroshima branch of World Government movement last year. And we are now striving our efforts to hold Asia Conference of World Government which will be held in Hiroshima...Peace movement in Japan is generally speaking rapidly expanding throughout country, and some Communists disguise themselves into peace movement and thus make our activities confused. Comparatively speaking our peace efforts are being oppressed by nation's tendency of rearmament. However, we want to keep our peace constitution. At our annual conference of United Church of Christ held in Hiroshima passed dicission [sic] of firm hold of our constitution No 9 article - having renounced all kind of war as a means of solution of international disputes...[signed] Kiyoshi''.

Self-folding air mail letter measures 7.25'' x 11.75''. Folds and small hole underneath signature, else near fine.
