John Singleton Copley oil on canvas portrait of a man identified as John Adams, who would have been approximately 30 years old at the time of this painting. Painting measures 25'' x 30'', in early frame measuring 29.75'' x 36'', upon which the plaque reads ''John Adams / John S. Copley / 1737-1815''. Evidence of smaller oval frame at edges of painting, typical of Copley's works.

Painting is featured in the collection of noted 20th century art and antiques collector Mitchel M. Taradash, with a photograph of the painting and frame in the December 1946 issue of ''The Magazine Antiques'', entitled ''American Furniture in the Taradash Collection''. Also with provenance from Christie's. Richly colored painting displays well, with moderate craquelure. Small losses of paint above eye, on cheek and on coat. Overall very good condition. A handsome portrait of the President as a young man by one of America's finest portraitists.
