Autograph letter signed by Jenny Lind, the 19th century Swedish opera sensation known as ''The Swedish Nightingale'', made famous to contemporary audiences by ''The Greatest Showman''. Eight page letter is dated 23 March 1849, shortly after Lind famously and mysteriously announced her retirement from opera at the age of 28, with interesting content concerning her fellow Swedish opera singer Mathilda Ebeling. Letter reads in part,
''I would be happy to help her in any way that I can to accomplish this in the event that her means are sufficient. Please be so kind as to relay this to Miss Ebeling and also ask her to forgive me for interfering in her affairs, but that I hope she can understand the good intentions on my part...I am concerned about her idea to adopt a new teacher again, who may be of a different opinion than Mr. [Manuel] Garcia and may muddle both the advice of Garcia and her own natural talent. As I do not know at all what her arrangements were after Garcia's departure from Paris...what side Miss E. has taken and with whom she is now studying. If Miss Eberling has managed to get Madame Persiani as her instructor, she is in good hands and ought to be able to draw much benefit from her great talent, but Madame Persiani knows nothing about drama training or the serious genre, which it is very important that Miss Eberling study...No one could more sincerely than I wish to see Swedish talent receive the best possible training, both for the motherland and for the world...''
Boldly signed ''Jenny Lind'' on the last page. Composed on two sheets of bifolium card-style stationery measuring 4.5'' x 7.25'' as folded. Also accompanied by sheet measuring 7.25'' x 9'', addressed to the recipient, and with an additional page in Lind's handwriting on verso. Folds to letter, else near fine condition. With translation.
