Jefferson Davis letter signed. Dated 11 September 1860, letter is addressed to the Secretary of the Navy and reads, ''R. P Ashe For appt. as civil engineer at the Navy yard, California. Respectfully submitted to the Secty of the Navy and earnestly commended to his personable consideration. Mr. Ashe is I am sure fully entitled to confidence and would prove a valuable officer. If appointed it will be a personal favor to your's. [signed] Jefferson Davis''. Single-page letter is countersigned by an unknown party. Attractively matted and framed beside an etching of Davis to an overall size of 15'' x 12.75''. Letter has not been removed from the frame for inspection but save for expected creasing appears near fine.
