James Monroe land grant signed as President, deeding 160 acres in Illinois to Nathaniel Prouty, a veteran of the War of 1812. Document is signed on 3 November 1818, less than one month before Illinois officially became a U.S. state. Interestingly, writing on the verso shows that the land was subsequently sold eight months later in July 1819 to a George Forsyth who then sold it himself a month later, proving that real estate speculation is indeed timeless. This was technically against the law, as veterans who were granted land were required to keep the property for at least five years. Vellum document measures 13'' x 9'', matted and presented in a double-sided frame, measuring 21'' x 17''. Some foxing and toning, overall in very good condition.
