James Garfield letter signed as U.S. Congressman, dated 1 February 1877. On House of Representatives letterhead, Garfield gives his autograph to a gentleman with the surname Rudolph, prompting him to inquire, ''My wife was a Rudolph and her family came from near the 'Head of Elk' in Maryland. Please inform me whether you are of the same family...[signed] J.A. Garfield''. Single page measures 7.5'' x 9.75''. Small holes at intersecting folds and some separation at ends. Very good condition.
