J.D. Salinger typed letter signed, with original transmittal envelope postmarked Windsor, Vermont. Salinger writes to Joyce Miller Hodgins, a friend who worked at ''The New Yorker'' in mid-century, during the time Salinger was publishing stories there and working on ''The Catcher in the Rye''. Salinger writes a lengthy letter dated only ''Monday'', in response to Joyce's letter dated 2 April 1965, a copy of which is included in the lot. He writes in part, ''...The truth be said, the non-abstract truth, the season of the year puts me in mind of subway-tale finales, in an unabashed extreme way...considering what you told me on the phone about emotional involvement, it's probably better we didn't get any more idiosyncratic notions than we already had. So hard to know for sure...[signed] As ever, Jerry''. Salinger's letter runs 1pp. and measures 8.5'' x 11'', with envelope measuring 6.5'' x 3.5''. Folds, otherwise near fine condition.
