J.D. Salinger autograph letter signed, with original transmittal envelope postmarked Windsor, Vermont on 16 December 1969. Salinger writes to Joyce Miller Hodgins, a friend who worked at ''The New Yorker'' in mid-century, during the time Salinger was publishing stories there and working on ''The Catcher in the Rye''. On a card featuring the artwork ''The Little Laundress'', Salinger turns a few clever phrases, as one can expect from him. In part, ''...Thanks for the news. It all sounds good. Strong and good...All is calm, all is no dimmer than usual...'' The news that Salinger refers to is contained in Miller's letter to Salinger dated 9 December, a copy of which is included here. Miller writes that she is working for the lawyer who handled her divorce and thanks Salinger for his help (''particularly help from one who didn't give me those horrid, gratuitous lectures about pulling up one's socks, etc.''). She also writes, ''a week from today, December 16th, marks my half year exactly of being in the A.A. program, and I have to give my first talk later in the month''. Salinger's letter measures 4.75'' x 7''. With envelope hand-addressed by Salinger. Both in near fine condition.
