Pierre Lacau typed letter signed, ''P Lacau'' as Egypt's official Director of Antiquities regarding King Tut's tomb and its discoverer, Howard Carter. Letter on Antiquities Department stationery is written in French. Partial letter consisting of only the second page of a two-page letter discusses the rights of Carter versus the rights of the Egyptian government to the objects and information obtained from the tomb. It translates in part, ''...So that this gift stays possible in the future, we have not completely registered the objects, which will put them into the public domain...While the temporary registration was happening I personally repeated this to Mr. Carter, in front of Mr. Lefebre who was recording the objects...So it is strange that Mr. Carter cites this non-registration as an acknowledgement of his rights over the objects. It has never been agreed, neither directly nor indirectly, in writing or verbally, that the objects would not be registered by common records before sending them to the museum...For the continuation of the work, Mr. Carter thinks that Article 6 in the contract entitles him to continue to take his notes indefinitely. But the general authorization is given for one year, doesn't the right to take notes seem to be limited as well by the same one year limit. The other questions have already been discussed or are less pressing. Yours sincerely, [signed] P. Lacau''. Sheet measures 8.25'' x 13.5''. Tears to filing holes on the left edge and toning, else near fine.
