Hunter S. Thompson typed letter signed, dated 5 May (1966) just days after his buoyant letter about receiving an advance from Random House; he's now spent the money and ''back to borrowing food money''. With his usual hyperbole, Thompson writes to his friend Paul Semonin, first updating him on the situation at ''Ramparts'' magazine, as its editor Robert Scheer was running for Congress. He then writes, ''...My run to NY seems doomed; I am back to borrowing food money...and if the second chunk of the advance doesn't come through in 3-4 days I'll be back to pawning guns. I thought the $900 would give me elbow room, but with $200 for you, $200 for the bike, $200 for rent and $150 for a Doberman pup I was left with chickenfeed. Certainly not enough for a NY run...All I need is an excuse. Right now Random thinks I'm halfway through the Rum Diary revisions and if I show up in NY they'll shit. Every time I mention the trip they say 'wait until the book comes out,' which is now autumn. Things here are quietly terrifying. I plan to leave the state before fall. If not, I'll go to jail...My whole psyche requires movement, but I can't move without money...Ciao -- [signed] H''. Single page letter on Harbin Springs stationery measures 8.5'' x 11''. Folds, and coffee ring on verso, else near fine condition.
