Dated 26 September [1961], Thompson writes to his friend Paul Semonin in part, ''...bad deal in TiaJuana [sic] - blew $400 on phoney operation - doctors did nothing - now we face it again - time passing, child growing, terror mounting. Will advise. / I may screw you out of the boarmeat - maggots got to it & we threw a lot away...We had homemade pork chops last night - incomparable. Next best thing is for me to secure a place where you can come & shoot one of your own. Will work on it. / If you enjoyed your visit as much as I did, it was OK...Send word on Aspen hunting, Bell's activities - other gossip...Things are haggard here - no good word for too long.
