Autograph letter signed by Gideon Welles, Secretary of Navy during the Civil War. Datelined Washington, 23 September 1860, letter was likely written in 1861, as Welles didn't begin service as Secretary until March of 1861. Marked by Welles as ''Unofficial'' to upper left, letter reads, ''Dear sir the bearer / [illegible], my nephew, has been on board the Minnesota since May last, and recent changes have induced him to ask leave to be transferred. I know not when he can do better than to join your class & I command him to you. Very Respectfully / Gideon Welles''. Single page letter measures 5'' x 8''. Very good to near fine.
