As President, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed first edition, fifth printing of ''Looking Forward''. Published by The John Day Company: New York: 1933. Inscribed on the front free endpaper in blue pen, ''To J.H. Sherrod / with a Merry Christmas / from / Franklin D. Roosevelt / 1933''. FDR signed approximately 200 copies of this book as presentation Christmas gifts during his first year as President. Contents contain a compilation of speeches given during 1932 and relating to the New Deal, with various commentaries added by Roosevelt, ''which bind the material together as a whole.'' Bound in blue cloth boards with gilt text, hardcover volume runs 279pp. Measures 5.5'' x 7.75''. Minor spotting to boards and some fading along spine, minor foxing and toning to pastedowns and interior, otherwise near fine condition. A very rare copy with a tight interior and a bold signature.
