Elsa Einstein typed letter signed, composed on 10 December 1933 shortly after she and Albert Einstein moved to Princeton from Germany. Elsa writes to her cousin Erich, mentioning Germany and also Albert Einstein's ''abhorrent'' reaction to public attention. Letter in German translates in part, ''...Be glad that you are employed and do not whine for a better position. Nowadays one has to be glad to just have some kind of employment. - We do not hear very much from Germany at all. My children are living abroad - Ilse and Rudi are in Holland, Margot is in Paris. There might be a chance of Margot coming to visit us sometime soon. I would really like that. She will do it, unless she decides to spend the rest of this winter in the South of France or the South of Italy instead.

Princeton is the prettiest university town that we have come to know in America so far. We are renting a very beautiful house, very old by American standards, very elegantly furnished, situated amid lovely parks. We rarely go to New York, but friends from there are visiting us almost every day. Albert mostly avoids showing up there, because every appearance of his, whether on the street or in a concert hall or theater, has always caused tremendous excitement. Since this is deeply abhorrent to him, he would rather miss some of the cultural or artistic events and many an enjoyment that might be available to him there. / We hope that we will see you here before long; maybe you will be able to come here sometime during the Christmas season....[signed] Elsa.'' Single page letter measures 8.375'' x 10.875''. Folds and chip at bottom left, else near fine condition.
