Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed as WWII General. Dated 22 June 1944, Ike writes to his wife Mamie from Bushy Park, London, concerning their young adult son John: ''Tomorrow is 2 years since I left Washington!...My darling / It has been lots of fun being with Johnny and trying to catch his viewpoint - his ideas, ambitions and general outlook. He is certainly approaching his army work with great seriousness, but is apparently a bit puzzled as to what he wants to do with his personal life. This is a natural thing, at his age; the only unnatural thing being the amount of thought he gives to such things. Most youngsters just rollick along in a healthy fashion, letting adventure and problem alike come up as they please - and meeting them on the spur of the moment. He says you are going to visit him in Benning. I think that's fine, as it will be nice for you to know how he is living etc. etc. But I think it would be unwise to stay too long. Undoubtedly he has some feeling (at least subconsciously) that he has always been carefully watched over. He is wondering how he will do 'on his own'. So he must be given a chance to be on his own before he comes up against really critical problems. I know how you feel about him - and how desperately you want him by your side as long as possible. But I think brief visits to him are more advisable than any long stay. I am so glad he will be able to tell you about us here - all we do - how we live etc. I think it will help a lot. We both talk of you all the time. I love you heaps. Don't forget me, because I'm looking forward only to the day I rejoin you permanently. Always your / Ike...'' Dwight and Mamie lost their first son to scarlet fever, and John remained their only surviving child. 2pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
