Four page Civil War letter from John Caywood, a civilian employee in the Quartermaster's office at Fort Leavenworth. Written in ink and dated 25 June 1864, letter reads in part: ''...Father Ingersole sewn me a paper containing notice of Nannie Shomas' death. Wish Pete would write me since he has come west.You tell him when you write him. I wrote will to send me this Live Oak but he does not do it...I was home last week Had an excellent visit took Mary a circular costing $25. Got her bonnet fixed for her. Got her a black lace veil and several little notions that women are always needing. I sent for her this morning by one of our men that has gone down in southern Kansas on business for this Office he will stop at Baldwin for Mry on Wednesday next as he comes back he has a nice team...& mate will come here & stay till after the 4th. She has a splendid circular the nices o fblack silk though I had better get her a nice one which I was about is I was out of patience when I wrote to Ma the other day about business...Kansas is a hard place to get a start...I had nothing...but for the encouraging and bolstering up that Mary gives me I would dare become utterly discouraged...I think now that I will succeed and be a man among men...'' 4pp. letter measures 5'' x 8''. Very good condition.
