Civil War letter by Herman Hooker of the 5th Vermont Infantry, Co. H. Hooker would be KIA at Savage's Station 7 months after writing this letter, where the 5th Vermont lost almost 200 in killed and wounded. Datelined Camp Griffon [sic] on 24 November 1861, Hooker writes, ''Dear Brother and friends...I am well and in good spirits but have prety hard times. Last wennesday we had our grand revew. We marched about 8 milds from camp and thare I saw more pople than I ever saw before...thare was about 80000 solders and the next day we went out on a scouting party and was gon all day. We marched that day about 15 milds and we begun to have a days rest but the the next morning about 9 o clock they halled us out and we had to go on picket guard which we have to do onse a weak and thare we have to stand all ends of wether but anuf of that it is pretay sickley hear and a good many dying of you have perhaps hurd of our los of men our company only five dyed out of our company but none by the swirde...good by from Herman Hooker''. Three page letter measures 5'' x 8''. Very good condition with phonetic spelling but legible handwriting. With full transcription.
