Charles Dawes watercolor on paper, depicting three Caribbean women entitled "Saturday Morning", an excellent example of Dawes' figure work. Signed by artist at lower right. Watercolor measures 22.5" x 15.25", taped on verso to mat measuring 25.5" x 20". Written to back of mat in pencil, "'Saturday Morning' / F'sted Fish Dock, F'sted St. Croix". Some discreet discoloration along top and right edge, though colors remain bright. Very good condition. Accompanied by a letter signed by Charles Hawes, dated 18 February 1969 to the consignor, giving background information on this particular painting, and stating that Hawes "called it 'Saturday Morning' in my December catalog". He continues, "At that time around nine oclock the women of Frederiksted gather at the fish dock here waiting for the fishing boats to come in. They carry boxes and all sorts of receptacles in which to carry home their purchased fish."
