Confederate Civil War letter by William R. Clayton of the 3rd Georgia Cavalry. Dated 2 June 1864, letter to his sister reads in part, ''...our division of cavalry is on the extreme right of Gen Johnston's army and we have been in line of battle for 7 days and nights. I think that we will leave here soon the Yankeys have not seemed inclined to want to give Battle. But they have tried to take us by surprise in the night they have made severell attempts to storm our Brestworks under cover of the night. But we have whipped them back every time. They made a charge the other night and got in 50 feet of our men before they fired on them but soon our gallant boys rose up and gave them a fire and then a yell and then another fire and then charged them, this threw them into confusion and they scattered like sheep, leaving all their dead in our possession and the wounded, which is immense, all this was in the dark, we are well prepared for them when they feel like coming...W R Clayton''. Letter runs 2pp. on a sheet of ruled ledger paper measuring 4.5'' x 13''. Toning, creasing and a tear from the right edge inwards, overall very good.
