Original ''Cleopatra'' shooting script, dated 15 July 1960 when production started on the controversial film starring Elizabeth Taylor that almost bankrupted 20th Century Fox. Despite being the highest-grossing film of 1963, ''Cleopatra'' was so plagued by production delays and overruns that the film failed to turn a profit, the only time in Hollywood history when such a pairing has occurred. ''Cleopatra'' was originally set to begin filming in late 1960, when this script originated. However, after false starts, including a new Director and problems with the script, filming didn't really get underway until a year later, in late 1961. Script, bound in scarlet red wrappers, measures 8.75'' x 11''. Numbered ''55'' on title page, script runs 147pp. long with a humorous typed note on the last page, undoubtedly written by the first Director on the film, Rouben Mamoulian: ''NOTE: THE DIALOGUE IN SEVERAL SCENES OF THE SCRIPT INCLUDING THAT OF THE LAST SEQUENCE HAS TO BE IMPROVED. - R.M.)''. Light uniform toning to pages, and light handling wear, overall in very good plus condition.
